Hundreds of books destined for charity have gone up in flames in a shed fire in Masterton.
Police are investigating a suspicious blaze that broke out about 11.30pm on Wednesday on Harlequin St, at a storage shed used as a collection point for books donated to the Heart Foundation.
Masterton fire station officer Mike Cornford said the 6m by 6m shed was well alight when fire crews arrived.
"It was well-involved by the time we got there ... it was too late to save it."
The shed was owned by nearby decorating company Colourplus and contained business supplies, including cardboard, as well as the books. Eight firefighters and two fire trucks worked for about an hour and a half to extinguish the blaze. It was unclear if an accelerant had been used, Mr Cornford said.
