KEY POINTS:
A man has had charges upgraded to murder after the car he was driving crossed the centre line and collided with two cars, killing one driver and leaving another with serious injuries.
Tony Allen Worrell, 49, from Henderson, will appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.
Police have earlier said Mr Worrell had previously been charged with assault.
Detective Inspector Mark Gutry told the Herald last month that the man was seen driving erratically by members of the public before he crashed into the two cars at Karaka on June 3.
Mr Worrell has been charged with the murder of newly-wed Katie Jean Powels, 26, and the attempted murder of Brett Stuart Robinson who was pulled from the wreckage of his car with a broken pelvis, hips, arm, wrist and leg.
Senior sergeant Denise Traill said Mr Worrell faces six more charges of assault for using his car as a weapon. She said it is alleged that Mr Worrell aimed his car at four other drivers before crashing into the two cars.
Ms Traill said Mr Worrell will be appealing the denial of bail at the Auckland High Court today.
