Disciplinary charges will be filed against three mental health workers involved in the care of Mark Burton, who killed his mother, Patricia, by stabbing her 56 times.
The Health and Disability Commissioner's Office said it would file disciplinary proceedings over the next few weeks against the staff. Their names are suppressed.
Morag McDowell, director of proceedings in the commissioner's office, said yesterday charges would be filed before the Medical Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal and the Nursing Council.
Patricia Burton was killed by her son in March 2001, a day after Mark Burton was released from Southland Hospital's mental health unit.
He was found not guilty of her murder by reason of insanity.
Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson's report into Burton's care described it as substandard.
