KEY POINTS:
Police may charge the driver of a truck from which an 8-year-old boy fell to his death on Friday.
The boy was travelling with a sibling on the back of a utility vehicle when he fell on to a quiet rural road in Mahia, in the northern Hawke's Bay.
Emergency services were called about 5.30pm. The boy is believed to have died at the scene.
Sergeant Aubrey Osmond, of Wairoa police, said the driver, a member of the boy's family, could face charges after investigations by the serious crash unit and coroner.
Osmond said children riding on the backs of trucks was common in the area. "Ninety-nine per cent of the time it's okay but there's always that chance that this will happen."
The boy's name would be released when all family had been informed, said Osmond.
