KEY POINTS:
Charges are likely to be laid if the culprit who poisoned an Auckland stream is caught.
Almost 300 eels and 50 fish died in the Omaru Creek in Glen Innes from severe burns caused by a toxic chemical.
The Auckland Regional Council is awaiting test results, but suspects concrete wastewater was dumped in the stream. Pollution Response Officer Toby Barach is appealing to the public for information. He says it is one of the most serious incidents of its type the council has worked on.
Mr Barach says urban streams support a variety of aquatic life and it will take a long time for the Omaru Creek to recover.
