KEY POINTS:
The 15-year-old driver of a 4WD which crashed at the weekend killing her friend may not know what charges, if any, she will face for several weeks.
Police said they had yet to interview the driver in Auckland's North Shore Hospital and any charges could be weeks away.
They had taken a blood sample as standard practice although alcohol was not believed to have contributed to the crash.
Richelle Murphy, also 15, died when the vehicle she was a passenger in rolled on Coast Road, at Muriwai, on Auckland's West Coast, on Sunday night.
She was not wearing a seat belt and police believe the driver and the other two 15-year-old passengers may also have been unrestrained.
Sergeant Colin Nuttall from the police serious crash unit said although a decision had yet to be made on charges, the driver would probably be prosecuted at least for breaching the conditions of her licence.
Speed and driver inexperience probably contributed to the crash, he said.
The mechanical condition of the vehicle was also being examined to find if that contributed to the incident.
The four occupants of the vehicle were all friends and students at Massey High School in West Auckland.
