Police have arrested a Mt Eden beneficiary after a letter filled with white powder was sent to the American Ambassador last week.
But detectives believe the man is not connected to three letters - one of which contained cyanide - sent to the United States Embassy and the British and Australian High Commissions.
A 62-year-old man will appear in the Auckland District Court today charged with posting an indecent article and wasting police time.
Embassy security staff opened the letter which contained a bag of white powder. Police said last night the powder is not believed to be toxic but more tests will be carried out.
Detective Superintendent Steve Shortland said the arrest should be a warning to hoaxers.
"Anyone contemplating hoax or copycat behaviour of this nature should know that if they do so, they will be detected."
