Rapper Scribe has spoken of his family's relief that someone has been charged over the death of a "favourite" aunty.
Susanna Luafutu Hutchinson died while crossing a busy Auckland intersection on a rainy night in May. She had been walking to a karaoke club event at the Pt Chevalier RSA.
Man Hing Cheung, 65, has been charged with careless driving causing the Samoan-born great-grandmother's death. The Milford man appeared in the Auckland District Court on Monday, and will return to court on Wednesday. Scribe, real name Malo Luafutu, said his family was pleased Cheung had been charged.
The family, which includes fellow singer and cousin Ladi6, were strong, but still wanted "some kind of closure", he said. Hutchinson's daughter, Victoria Hutchinson, said the family held no animosity towards Cheung, but wanted accountability.
Scribe urged motorists to give their full attention to the road. "Just be careful." The 34-year-old said Hutchinson, 70, was "one of my favourite aunties".
