A US company called Boral Roofing plans to launch a new environmentally conscious roof tile this February. The promise is that these roof tiles are able to absorb smog; they are made from titanium dioxide, which will react with nitrogen oxide in the air to create nitrates. This company joins several others who are attempting to "green" their building supplies and offset pollutants.

Lasers detect roadside bombs
Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are responsible for killing a high proportion of soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bomb detection technology has progressed significantly in recent years and now there is promise in a development using laser technology. In the form of a laser pointer, short and long pulses of light will detect and "read" the presence of explosive substances along the roadside.
Connect with the makers of your clothes
Traceability is paramount when it comes to being an ethical consumer. Online retailers frequently include their company's ethics somewhere on their website and the company behind the IOU project has made the story behind their clothing even more vivid and real for consumers. Each person involved in a garment's production has their story and image on the website, all you need to do is complete the circle with a photo of you wearing what you buy.
