KEY POINTS:
Three people were injured after being struck by a falling chandelier in a freakish accident at the Auckland Home Show yesterday.
A woman believed to be in her 50s was taken to Ascot Mercy Hospital where she was treated for minor cuts and bruises after being pinned to the ground by the fallen chandelier. Two other people were treated at the scene by St John Ambulance staff.
Witnesses yesterday described what had happened, claiming it was only through good fortune that the accident had not been far worse.
Home Show stallholder Shane McCloy, from Superior Kitchens, said it appeared the chandelier had been attached to the ceiling only with nylon.
"You could see it falling. It was a slow fall but not slow enough to get out of the way in time."
Another nearby stallholder told the Herald on Sunday the three people were lucky their injuries weren't more serious.
"It was horrific. I had my back turned and when I turned around there was this woman trapped underneath this cast-iron monstrosity," the witness said.
"She was knocked out at first and there was a lot of blood coming from her head."
Ben Brougham, Home Show managing director, described the incident as "regrettable".
He said contractors had since checked to ensure all other lights at the show were secure so it wouldn't happen again.
