Special moments from 50 years ago are sure to surface in Greytown tomorrow when a rugby team many older fans consider to be the finest ever to come out of Wairarapa gets together again.
A reunion of the Greytown junior team 1959-61 is to be a highlight of the club's old-timers' day.
The boys from yesteryear will then adjourn to the Top Pub, where as youngsters, they always celebrated the endless victories that carved the team's name into rugby folklore.
Having started the ball rolling as a third grade side _ when they played 17 matches for 17 wins _ the players stepped up to the junior grade and in 1960 won the Wairarapa championship, the Playle Cup, Balfour Cup, Jeffreys Cup and Brough Cup winning 12 of its 16 games, drawing two and losing two and clocking up 276 points, conceding 89.
In those days a try was worth only three points and the following year the team's record was to read even better, playing 18 matches and winning all but one _ and that match was drawn _ putting 404 points on the board and conceding 79.
The star-studded line-up produced many future Wairarapa senior representative players, including future Maori All Black captain George Mahupuka, flying winger Fred Yule and halfback and utility back Johnny Rewi.
Rewi was credited with having the best dive pass in the business and his ability to ''sell a dummy'' brought grudging admiration from opponents.
All three will be at the reunion.
The celebration has largely been organised by the team's captain Denis Conwell and Greytown businessman Rob (Spike) Saxton.
There will be a few faces missing as the passing of the years has seen the death of Harvey Todd, Rob (Gus) Morris, Rex Meyrick, coach Colin Alexander and manager Stuart Meyrick.
