Masterton sawyer Faavae Sefo joined with his New Zealand team-mate Warren Riddle, of Feilding, to win the national double sawing championship in record time at the Raetihi A&P Association's centennial show during the weekend.
Sefo and Riddle clocked a time of 12.52s, well inside the previous old national record of 13.63s set by Jason Wynyard and the late Allan Salter.
"It was one of those times when everything clicked. It all felt pretty comfortable really," Sefo said. "It wasn't that we did anything different, we just got a flier and kept going."
Sefo also finished second in the finals of the underhand chop and the single saw while another Masterton competitor, Quentin Fawcett, won the boys' underhand chop.
Fawcett certainly has breeding on his side to make a name for himself in wood chopping. He is the son of Grant Fawcett and grandson of Eddie Fawcett, both of whom have won major titles in wood chopping here and overseas.
