Two trees more than 100 years old are to be chopped down today to make way for the Kitchener Group's rejuvenation of Victoria Park Market.
Auckland City Councillor Faye Storer said several members of the planning fixtures committee, which dealt with the application, opposed destroying the trees but had no jurisdiction to stop it.
Trees in the CBD are not protected unless they are specified in the District Plan.
She said arborists found the trees were not going to last much longer.
