After a break the bowls report is back with plenty happening throughout the Wairarapa.
The final of Inter-club between the Masterton and Carterton Clubs saw Central taking out both the team and singles trophy with 69 points in teams event and 42 singles, followed by Cossie 65 + 40; East 59 + 33; Lansdowne 54 +36; Carterton RSA 52 +27; Dalefield 36+21; Belvedere 35 + 14; St Marks 22 + 11.
The Hikawai Trophy round one was played. This is a long standing rinks competition which is played between the Masterton Clubs. When first played there were 16 clubs in the Masterton area and each club had 1 team and was played over 21 ends. Today with only 4 clubs the format is 2 teams per club playing 2 games of 10 ends per night. The first round saw Central with 8 points, East 5, Lansdowne 3 and Cossie 0, with 2 rounds to go this could well change.
The Wairarapa Association Triples had 14 teams entered of which 5 teams qualified for the playoffs with the final between Donald Leighton, Janice Leighton and Ray Beale - Wairarapa, meeting John Johnson, Colleen McCutcheon and Shirley Wheatly from Bush/Ruahine, this was a close final with Bush claiming the win 9/8.
Central Club Handicap Singles winner was Sarndra Bain R/up Marilyn O'Neale.
Cossie Club pairs was won by Kelvin Simonsen and Jo Kerins.
Carterton Triples saw 8 teams representing the 4 clubs (RSA, Belvedere, Dalefield and St Marks) with the outright winners from RSA - Trevor Hicks, Robin Wilson, and Brian Gale.
South Wairarapa Association have played Round 3 of Interclub with Workingmens Club in the lead from Morisons Bush, Oddfellows, South Featherston and Featherston RSA.
The Colts singles was won by Marie Harford with runner up Colleen Billman.
Oddfellows held the Miller Bars Triples which was won by Paul Miller, Lorna Green and Dylan Taylor. Steven Johnston won the singles R/up Mark Taylor. Eight teams competed for the Wairarapa Association 4s with 3 teams qualifying with 5 or more points. The first playoff was between a Bush/Ruahine team of Karen Cumming, Colleen McCutcheon, Wendy Hulena and Betty Gilmour and the Central combination of Elva and Kelly Simonsen, Paul and Gail Miller who took out the game and went into the final against a team that was put together on Saturday evening and skipped by Steven Johnston (Oddfellows) with Neville and Julie Mikoz (East) and lead Marie Harford (Oddfellows). The more experienced team fought back from a closely contested game and came through the winners 13/9.
East Club Championship 4s was won by the team skipped by George Mahupuku with Brenda Whitehead, Marjory Mahupuku and Ron Emerson from Tony Manu, Logan Mikoz, Jim Ball and Alan McMaster 14/7.
Ray Beale played off for the Colts Championship against Josephine Rimene and he came out the winner after 3 close games.
Central club held their Colts Singles with 12 players contesting the title.
The final will be decided this week. With this number of colts the future of Indoor Bowls is looking good.
The South Association has held the Champion of Champion Singles with the following players representing their respective clubs: Avon Innes - Morisons Bush; Maurie Tregurtha - Workingmen's Club; Christine Hamilton - Featherston RSA; Steven Johnston - Oddfellows and Kevin Hobbs - South Featherston. Kevin played some brilliant games to gain the title of South Wairarapa Champion Singles player for the season with Steven Johnston runner up.
