Parents are being denied opportunities to bundle their children off to the movies during school holidays because of a shortage of appropriate films, the chief censor says.
Bill Hastings today criticised New Zealand film distributors and exhibitors for not supplying G-rated movies for the school holidays.
"Where are the G movies?" he asked.
School holidays presented the perfect opportunity for relatively inexpensive family outings, yet the cinemas were not showing any G-rated movies the whole family could enjoy, he said.
"In New Zealand, a G rating is every parent's last sanctuary," Mr Hastings said.
"There should be nothing in a G-rated film that would cause anyone concern.
"In these tough economic times, I would have thought the New Zealand film industry would be trying to reverse declining ticket sales by offering films that the whole family could enjoy."
