A committee has been formed after an extensive tidy-up of the pioneer section of Masterton Cemetery, charged with taking restoration of the old cemetery a step further.
Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson and councillor Gary Caffell, who chairs the parks and open spaces task group, were among those at the cemetery on Sunday to inspect progress in the clean-up and to discuss what could now be done to continue the restoration work.
Roddy McKenzie, Graeme Evans, Trevor Martin, Ash Braggins, Sara Avery, Cyril Matiaha, Andrew Donald and Cheryl Cavanagh were elected to the committee. It will formulate a list of priorities to discuss with the Masterton District Council.
Mrs Patterson said cemetery clean-up work had been overdue and she was keen to hear ideas for further restoration.
Questions were raised not only on grave restoration but on aspects ranging from providing a suitable information site, maps of the area highlighting various sites to aesthetic tree planting, providing seating and more rubbish bins.
