A group of celebrities has been appointed as "lifestyle ambassadors" to encourage young people to have healthy, active lifestyles.
Television personalties John Campbell and Nathan Rarere, All Black Keven Mealamu, current and former Silver Ferns Laura Langman and Bernice Mene, music group Spacifix, Footnote Dance Company and runner up of last year's New Zealand Idol contest Indira Moala have been appointed.
Sports Minister Trevor Mallard said all were positive role models who brought a range of different lifestyles and experiences young people could identify and connect with.
"Inspiring our young people through new initiatives like this that grab kids' attention are important if we are serious about combating the increasing numbers of inactive, overweight and obese children and young people."
Youth Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta said the lifestyle ambassadors would visit schools and youth events.
They would also act as "virtual buddies" by providing advice on physical activity and nutrition through youth websites as well as a text message campaign encouraging young people to "keep it up" with their physical activity and nutrition goals.
