Police are urging Cantabrians to take extra care of security during show week.
Senior Sergeant Peter Laloli says it is traditionally a time noted in burglars' diaries as an opportunity for prime pickings. He says warmer weather, extra people around the city and drinking all provide opportunities for sneak thieves.
Motels are sometimes left unlocked to allow for latecomers, and cash from race winnings is often left lying around in rooms.
Peter Laloli says people from out of town need to ensure they are not being lax about security and take extra precautions. He says there will be extra police patrolling the streets, so people should be aware it would not be wise to drink and drive.
