Food safety watchdogs say energy drinks high in caffeine are unsuitable for children, young people and pregnant women.
A risk profile report by the NZ Food Safety Authority found some people may experience anxiety if consuming more than 3mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight a day.
Massey University professor of nutrition John Birkbeck said energy drinks had a more significant effect on children because of their smaller body size.
