KEY POINTS:
New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary will be remembered on Sunday, January 11, on the first anniversary of his death.
His life and death will be commemorated at Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral, the place of his state funeral.
It was customary to mark the first anniversary of the death of people whose funerals are held at the Cathedral, Rev Jayson Rhodes said.
Sir Ed's name will be read out as part of the prayers of the church on Sunday morning.
His garter banner from St George's Chapel Windsor, Windsor Castle, is now hanging in St Mary's Church in the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
The banner was an ongoing reminder of Sir Edmund's achievements and also of his funeral which was held in St Mary's, the Cathedral Dean, the Very Rev Ross Bay, said.
People continued to visit St Mary's to see the banner and to reflect on Sir Ed's life.
Last January, before the state funeral, thousands of people queued for hours at the cathedral to pay tribute to Sir Ed. They reflected on his contribution to New Zealand and across the world.
"We continue in particular to hold Sir Ed's family in our prayers as they mourn the loss of a loved family member," Mr Bay said.
