Giants will have national junior rep Campbell Gaunt back in the catching role when they play Porirua City United in an Inter City series men's softball match at South Park, Masterton, tomorrow.
Gaunt missed Giants' titanic struggle with star-studded Miramar last weekend, which Miramar won 2-0 in a tiebreaker after the scores were locked at 1-1 at the end of ordinary time, and his absence meant first stringer pitcher Ritchie Clarke deputised for him as catcher, and Justin Karaitiana was on the pitching mound. Karaitiana turned in an outstanding performance in sweltering conditions to keep Miramar scoreless until their seventh innings and he will provide Giants with two excellent options in the pitching department tomorrow now that Clarke is available.
Victory over PCU would greatly boost Giants' chances of making the Inter City semifinals and, while Clarke readily concedes another close battle is in prospect, he sees no reason why the home team shouldn't claim the spoils.
"It's the same old story, if we front up and play well anything is possible," Clarke said.
