Police are hunting the person who shot a cat in the leg in Waitara, near New Plymouth, on Tuesday.
Waitara police Senior Sergeant Matt Prendergast said police were still trying to find the culprit.
The cat, Midge, was shot by a hollow-tip .22 bullet at Waitara's East Beach. Her leg was so badly damaged it needed to be amputated.
