Fundraising for the construction of an all-weather athletics track at the Pugh Sportsbowl in Masterton continues to gather momentum.
Following hard on the heels of an announcement by Trust House that it was granting $40,000 towards the facility, comes news of a second $50,000 grant from Pelorus Trust.
The total raised is now $553,000 and has moved closer to the $776,000 required for the track to become a reality.
"We are certainly moving in the right direction, we are now well within sight of our target," Wairarapa Regional All-Weather Track Trust trustee Mark Harris said yesterday.
He said it was too early to confirm a date for track construction to start but it was hoped work would begin by next summer.
The track will have eight lanes and be built to IAAF specifications over a period of 12 to 16 weeks depending on variables such as the weather. Its completion will see Masterton in line to host a number of national track and field events at levels ranging from primary school to senior.
