Carterton staved off a brave Martinborough onslaught in the last quarter to win their Wairarapa-Bush senior second division grand final match by 14-12.
Three penalty goals to fullback Jono Hurley and a try to Ritchie McDonald saw Carterton out to a comfortable 14-0 lead, but Martinborough made matters interesting by striking late in the game with tries to Ryan Renata and Ayden Lambert and a conversion by Hayden Harmon.
The Carterton cause was not helped by the three yellow cards they picked up during the game, two of them to Wairarapa-Bush prop Logan Ili. At one stage they had just 13 players on the paddock and they finished the game one short.
Ili's first yellow card appeared to be for a rucking offence and the second was for a late tackle which he apparently didn't make..
Two yellow cards in the one game means a red card, and probable suspension, so the Carterton club is likely to appeal the second incident at least.
No.8 Joe Harwood, lock Tomasi Kedrabuka and hooker Richie McDonald were tireless workers for Carterton up front and the pick of the backs were midfielders Glen Bunny and Tommy Harmon.
In Jarrod Hawkins had a lively flanker, Matt O'Neal took down some good lineout ball, Ryan Renata was a tidy and purposeful first-five and Owen Coulson was never afraid to impose himself on the Carterton defence at second-five.
The President's grade A grand final saw Greytown-Tuhirangi have a clear edge on Gladstone in the battle for possession and they used it wisely, winning 21-5 while in the President's grade B decider Mastertlon Red Star beat Carterton 18-3.
Also played at Memorial Park was a match between the East Coast colts and Petone with the Coasters needing victory to claim a top four place in the Wellington competition. They gave it their best shot but went down to a well-organised Petone combination 30-10.
