Carterton weightlifter Kylie Parry will be a warm favourite to win her 63kg grade at the North Island championships in Auckland this weekend.
As the current national title-holder and defending North Island champion, Parry, 30, has a lot going for her but she is taking nothing for granted.
"It's like anything, you never know what might happen on the day," she said. "If you're not on your game you struggle, simple as that."
To qualify to defend her national title, also at Auckland, in October Parry needs to lift a combined weight of 102.5kg this weekend and she is optimistic of that being comfortably within her reach.
"Let's say it certainly should be achievable," she said. "It's not a huge challenge if everything goes according to plan."
As the only competitive weightlifter in the Wairarapa area, Parry, who finished fourth at the last Oceania championships, admits to finding it difficult to keep herself motivated.
She basically trains on her own, using advice sent to her by email from an Auckland-based coach to "keep me on the straight and narrow."
Her biggest worry is getting herself into bad habits in terms of technique because there is no one locally with the knowledge to help out in that respect.
"It's easy to start doing something wrong and just keep doing it because you are unaware of it," she said. "It's not until you get into competition lifting that you find out whether you are still on the right track or not."
