More than 30 Carterton people made the most of the chance to check out the council's multimillion-dollar investment into improving its wastewater treatment by attending an open day at the plant on Saturday.
Carterton District Council hosted the Wastewater Management Plan Open Day to give residents the opportunity to see the new systems, land and technology that form part of its long-term plan to reduce the volume of treated effluent discharged into the Mangatarere Stream.
Wastewater project manager Greg Boyle said people responded well to the presentation at the Events Centre and the tour of the treatment plant, UV plant, irrigator and wetlands.
"The weather couldn't have been more favourable and everything seemed to go well," he said. "There was lots of interest in seeing what had gone on and for people to give up part of their Saturday -- the wastewater plant is probably not the most alluring place -- but everyone learnt something from their experience."
Council staff Garry Baker and Andy Duncan were on hand to explain the system, guiding two groups through the plant, with Don Bell and Esther Dijkstra from the Mangatarere Restoration Society leading the sessions at the wetland.
