Summer golf continued at Carterton last Saturday with the playing of the third round of the men's and women's summer cups.
In the men's higher handicap division competition was tough indeed with the first four players all scoring 40 points.
They finished, on countback, in the order of David Wills, Nigel Bain, Lyn Evans and Craig Wilson. Warren Birdling finished fifth with 39 and Tim Druzianic, sixth, with 38.
The best of the men on the day was Tom Bingham who, with 41 points, won the higher handicap division of the men's competition. Second in that division was Russ Sadler, with 40 points, from Steven Larsen, 39, while three players ? Ralph Day, Brian Field and Steve Andrews ? all returned 38 point totals.
In the women's division Alison Bodle led the way, but only on countback from Val Willis with both players returning 41 point stableford totals.
Sandra Gillies filled third slot with 40 points while two players ? Pauline Craig and Kate Keen ? each came in with 39.
Colleen Southey completed the women's prize list with her 39 point total.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin competition was won by Stu Ingham while the "All Teed Up" balls were won, for the women, by Val Willis and, for the men, by David Wills.
Holes in two were achieved by five players ? Corrie van Zanten, Stu Ingham, Brian Field, Barbara Birchall and Flo Watkins.
Carl Churchward was the popular winner of the members' draw for the day.
TWILIGHT GOLF:
Twilight golf is proving to be a very popular occasion at Carterton this year.
Player numbers approach 50 regularly and the level of enjoyment is, without doubt, very high.
On January 4 the Wrightsons sponsored three person Ambrose competition drew a good field with the team of Justin Taylor, Alan Wall, and Kerry and Denis Fenwick winning the day.
Runners-up were Eric Collings, Ray Clarke and George Rink.
The Greytown Liquor Plus closest to the pin on hole 12 was won by Dean Mazey and the "All Teed Up" closest to the pin in two on hole 10 was claimed by Simon Diplock.
The January 11 competition for the twilight players was a stableford eleven hole event sponsored by Braiden International.
Both Kerry Fenwick and Colleen Southey scored 28 points to fill first and second slots respectively while Whana Rohe, with 27 points, came in third.
Both Justin Taylor and Shane Halligan scored 26 points.
Mark Schofield won the Plumbing World closest to the pin on hole 15 while Aiden Konise won the Greytown Liquor Plus event on hole 12.
Shane Halligan took the "All Teed Up" prize for being nearest to the pin in two on hole 10.
The special Greytown Butchery Least Putts event for the evening was won by Alison Bodle.
For both of these occasions all participants were most appreciative of the edibles and prizes supplied by Greytown Butchery.
FOOTNOTE:
With the golf courses now drying out, the run increasing, the ball now occasionally bouncing in unexpected directions and the wind maintaining its most unseasonal strength one would expect that scoring would be getting a little more difficult.
However, as evidenced by the results detailed above, generally scoring is being maintained at a very high level.
Indeed I was told recently that, in one event, players who scored 40 points missed out on prizes!
Golf, it seems to me, is a game in which, when you least expect it, the totally unexpected will usually occur.
