A drink driver has smashed through the bedroom of a Carterton couple for the second time in 12 years.
Robbie and Chris Davies were jolted awake about 12.30am on Friday. They found an apologetic driver staring at them from behind the wheel.
The driver, 20, was breathalysed at 721mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, almost twice the legal limit.
"I thought it was a big earthquake, Chris sat up in a big hurry, and then I realised nothing's moving. I looked out of the window and there he was. I was thinking, 'You stupid boy'. I told him he was stupid," Davies said.
Carterton Senior Constable Paul Dallinger said the man had been driving down Augustus St and had barrelled straight through the T-intersection without braking.
Davies said the man - like his predecessor 12 years ago - had apologised and the couple checked he was okay and that the car "wasn't going to burst into flames".
Meanwhile, a Flaxmere motorist caught driving drunk and unrestrained with her 1-week-old baby on her lap said she thought she was "okay to drive".
Diane Ellen Hazel, 25, had spent Christmas in Kerikeri when she drove intoxicated on Boxing Day and was recorded at 672mcg - 1 times the legal limit.
She pleaded guilty to one charge of drink-driving when she appeared in Hastings District Court this week.
She was sentenced to six months' supervision, disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to undergo drug and alcohol counselling. She would also attend parenting classes.
