Connecting Communities Wairarapa is requesting $18,500 from Carterton District Council to fully fund the salary of a Carterton Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator who would work 15 hours a week.
Neighbourhood Support assists Wairarapa Police, Civil Defence, Carterton Community Patrol and the Carterton Community development manager.
Neighbourhood Support groups cover 327 households with 26 groups established in Wairarapa.
Its role so far has been to "assist with police enquiries, modify the speed limit on Richmond Rd, keep the neighbourhood informed of road progress and likely future developments in the area and strengthen relationships between adjoining support groups".
The $18,500 from council would be reduced to $5500 from 2015 onwards as Neighbourhood Support developed a "supported volunteer" system instead of having a part-time co-ordinator.
