With the festive season winding down things are getting back to normal at Carterton Golf Club.
Last Saturday, January 8, the second round in the Summer Cup competitions was played.
There are Summer Cups in contention for both the men and the women members of the club.
Emma Wills headed the ladies field with 37 stableford points but had to shade Bridget Price on countback to do so.
Countbacks were required to determine all of the eight winners in the men's competition.
Russ Sadler's 41 point total with 21 points on the second nine edged George Rink into second place. George had 41 points also but only 20 points on the second nine.
Both Chris Connor and Steven Larsen scored 40 points, Chris getting the nod on countback.
Three players - Lyn Evans, Eric Behringer and Craig Wilson - all scored 39 points and finished in that order on countback.
Even the last place in the prize list was hotly contested with Richard Chapman winning the day as a result of having the best last six holes score.
The Marquis of Normanby Hotel Men's Nearest the Pin competition on hole 12 went to Lyn Evans who also won the men's "All Teed Up" ball for the day and, in addition, scored a hole in two.
Barbara Birchall won the "All Teed Up" ball for ladies and she, also, scored a hole in two.
Two other players - Val Edwards and Craig Wilson - achieved holes in two.
VETERANS:
Although the official veterans' programme will not start until after the official opening day of the club, a good number of veteran players turned out for an informal competition on Tuesday, January 11.
Both Bob Walker and Gary Smith blitzed the field with 42 point stableford scores.
Arie van Zanten filled third place with 40 while Ron Lukies filled fourth slot with a mere 39!
FOOTNOTE:
Stuart Appleby's come from behind win in the Mercedes Golf tournament in Hawaii really exemplified the "never give up" attitude of most Australian sportsmen and women. Seemingly out of contention after the first round, Appleby fought back to win on the fourth day by a single shot.
On the local level, Bob Walker's win in the Tuesday veterans' event was of a similar nature.
After playing three holes, Bob had amassed the magnificent total of just two points and might well have been excused if he thought of going home around about then.
But in the next 15 holes Bob scored 39 points to lead the field - admittedly on countback.
Yes, golf's a funny game but that's why we all keep coming back to play!
