A medical emergency at a home in the main street of Carterton backed up southbound traffic on SH2 halfway to Masterton on Saturday.
Police officers, paramedics and a volunteer Carterton fire crew attended the scene in High St at about 11am, and a small crowd of people gathered on the footpath near where the emergency unfolded.
Several police vehicles were parked near the scene, with a fire engine and ambulance, and southbound traffic on SH2 slowed to a near-crawl to a point almost halfway to Masterton. Police and emergency workers were at the scene for more than an hour and traffic returned to a more usual speed and flow soon after.
Fire communications supervisor Jan Wills said Featherston firefighters had also been scrambled, alongside an ambulance crew, to an unrelated medical emergency at Tauherenikau shortly before 1pm on Saturday.
