Two records were set by Carterton athletes on the first day of the Wellington children's athletic championships held at Newtown Park, Wellington on Sunday.
Corey Casey broke the long-standing record for the 13yrs boys 1500m by 6secs in clocking a time of 4mins 24secs.
Then in the 14yrs mixed medley relay the team of Kate McKay, Cameron Sinclair,Corey Casey, Ellen Schaef and Chris McCartney knocked all of 15secs off the previous best time. They clocked 4mins 12.3secs in an event which involved one leg over 800m, 400m and 200m and two legs over 100m.
The Carterton team competed throughout the day wearing black armbands in memory of their coach, and Athletics Carterton life member, Jim McKenzie, who died on Friday. The team was also to form a guard of honour at his funeral service this week.
