Police hunting the killer of a young Auckland mother have ruled out the occupants of two cars seen near where her body was found.
Last week police said they were looking for the occupants of two cars seen in an Auckland reserve the night before the body of Katrina Jefferies, 22, was found in a bush reserve on July 12, two days after she disappeared.
However, police said today the person who told them of the sightings got the day wrong and the cars were seen on Friday, July 8, two days before she was reported missing.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the sightings had been discounted.
Ms Jefferies was found dead in Waikowhai Reserve in suburban Hillsborough. She had upper body injuries and police said although they knew what caused her death they would not release details.
"We won't be discussing that publicly," Ms Hegarty said.
"The pathologist has advised us what he thinks the cause of death was and that will be determined by the coroner."
Ms Hegarty said police did not have a weapon and were not looking for a weapon but she refused to say any more about how the injuries were inflicted.
"We don't believe we are looking for a weapon."
She said police had had other sightings of Ms Jefferies but that had yet to be confirmed.
Ms Jefferies, who had a 20-month-old boy, lived with her mother about a kilometre from where her body was found.
She was last seen by her mother leaving their home on the night of July 10.
Police have appealed for help and said anyone with information can call the police hotline -- 0800-924 569.
