KEY POINTS:
A carpark attendant was robbed while opening an inner city parking building in Wellington early this morning.
The attendant, at the Clifton Terrace carpark, answered a knock on the office door about 7.10am today.
When he opened the door a man burst in, grabbed him by the throat and demanded money.
The robber claimed to have a weapon, police said.
As the attendant handed over three metal cash boxes the robber punched him in the face and grabbed the boxes.
He ran from the office toward the cable car.
The man was described as possibly Polynesian, about 1.75m tall, of solid build with "a bit of a stomach" and wearing a dark blue beanie that was pulled down over his face, a blue knitted round necked jersey with a white top underneath and blue jeans.
He has a faded tattoo visible on the top of his right hand.
Wellington police would like to hear from any one who was in the area at the time.
