Murder accused Brad Callaghan appeared in Auckland District Court this morning.
Callaghan, 32, was arrested last month after a 10-week inquiry into the murder of his former partner Carmen Thomas.
Ms Thomas' dismembered body was found inside plastic containers in the Waitakere Ranges earlier this month.
Callaghan appeared in court via video link from Mt Eden prison this morning for an administrative hearing.
He was dressed in a green t-shirt and maroon shorts.
Judge Josephine Bouchier asked Callaghan if he could see Stuart Grieve, QC, his counsel, clearly and he said he could.
Crown prosecutor Simon Moore, QC, told the court that he needed time to get together at least 80 sworn statements.
Mr Moore said the Crown wanted to bring the case before the court by Christmas but "out of an abundance of caution" was requesting further time.
Mr Grieve did not oppose this application but reserved the right to apply for bail before this time.
Callaghan was remanded in custody until February 8.
There were supporters at court for both Callaghan and Thomas with tears on both sides afterwards.
