KEY POINTS:
Police are still trying to piece together the events which lead to a potential carjacking victim being found at the Auckland Domain with a gunshot wound to his leg yesterday afternoon.
The injured man was found near the Park Rd grandstand after calling for an ambulance on his cellphone.
"He claims that it was a carjacking and that he was shot and they took his car but he was quite confused," said Police Inspector Cornell Kluessien.
It appears the carjacking occurred somewhere else in Auckland but the man, who is in his mid 30s, has no recollection of how he ended up at the Domain.
According to witnesses the man had been lying on the ground for some time but looked like he was relaxing in the sun.
When police arrived the man had a backpack, his cellphone and a bottle of cola with him. His leg had an entry and exit wound which appears to have been from a gunshot.
The man was taken to Auckland Hospital. His injuries were not believed to have been life-threatening. No weapon was found at the Domain.
The man is described as having a shaved head and was wearing a black T-shirt and white boardshorts.
Some young people on mountain bikes were seen talking to him between 1 and 2pm and police would like to hear from them.
