A caregiver raised the alarm after finding a 53-year-old injured in a serious assault in his Levin home this morning.
Police have launched an investigation while the man lies in a serious condition at Palmerston North Hospital.
The caregiver found the man injured about 8.30am and phoned emergency services.
"Early indications suggest the man has been a victim of a serious assault," said Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said.
"We have secured the scene and a scene examination is underway. Officers are also in the process of speaking to witnesses and the man's family.
