A former Child, Youth, and Family caregiver and foster parent was this afternoon found guilty of eight charges of sexually abusing young girls who were in his care.
John Alexander Lindsay, aged 60, was cleared of three further charges following a day-and-a-half deliberation by a jury in Christchurch District Court, the Christchurch Court News website reported.
Judge Raoul Neave remanded Lindsay in custody for sentence on November 25, and called for a pre-sentence report but ruled out home detention. Defence counsel David Bunce made no application for bail.
The verdicts came on the ninth-day of the trial in which three woman complainants gave evidence of being sexually abused by Lindsay in Southland and Christchurch, at various times over a 23-year period from about 1980.
Lindsay was found guilty of one charge of attempted sexual violation by rape and seven of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection.
Lindsay had denied any offending, saying that the women were either confused about who had abused them as children or the complaints were a figment of their imagination.
The crown pointed out that Lindsay had pleaded guilty - but not been sentenced - on a 2007 charge of sexual grooming of a girl.
He took photographs of the nine-year-old girl naked or dressed in a negligee.
