A Dunedin woman, jailed last year for driving with one of the country's highest blood-alcohol readings, has admitted dishonestly obtaining $1540.16 from an 87-year-old dementia victim for whom she was once a caregiver.
Patricia Anne Konia, 47, unemployed, appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday on 11 dishonesty charges and one each of breaching bail and release conditions.
Although Judge Mary O'Dwyer granted Konia bail until April 26, she told the defendant that was so she could put her affairs in order.
Prosecutor Sergeant Paul Knox said the victim lived alone and depended on caregivers, who had previously included Konia.
Some time before December 7, the defendant went to the victim's address and obtained her Eftpos card and pin number, and used it to obtain $1540.16 of cash and goods.
The woman's family quickly became concerned about the number and size of the transactions and had the card cancelled.
Police found some of the goods at Konia's home on December 22.
* Konia was jailed for six months last July for driving with a blood alcohol level of 426mg in 100 millilitres of blood, more than five times the 80mg adult legal limit.
