A few minutes spent with CareerStep will provide insight into your preferences, competencies, and your ideal work environment. And it will suggest jobs you are likely to enjoy and be good at.

CareerStep's five-section personal report comprises:

1. Introduction

A summary of each report section along with a brief discussion of vocational interest groups, preferences and how your list of representative jobs is determined.

2. Vocational Orientation

This section includes a graphical presentation of your preferences and competencies including an interpretation of each preference and a comparison with your perceived competency in that area.

Areas examined include: working commercially, working investigatively, working expressively, working socially, working methodically, and working physically. There's also a discussion of your overall response pattern and a work role evaluation checklist to use when considering potential jobs.

3. Work Environment

Environment factors such as: suitable organisation size and type, vocational attitude, desired work complexity and work pressure level are presented in graphical form and interpreted.

4. Representative Jobs

Approximately 1400 jobs have been evaluated in terms of the proportions of each of the vocational interest groups they involve. For example, working as a commercial pilot could involve problem solving (working investigatively), hand skills (working physically) and following set procedures (working methodically). These three main characteristics can then be used to classify the occupation of pilot. Each job is displayed with the required education and training level.

5. Job Search Ideas and Strategies

The appendix includes exercises to further explore your vocational interests and plan your job search. It discusses the all-important factor of attitude and provides tips for getting the job you want.
