KEY POINTS:
Career diplomat Peter Kennedy has been appointed New Zealand's next ambassador to the European Union and Belgium.
Mr Kennedy is also to be accredited to Luxembourg and the EU's two newest member states Romania and Bulgaria.
Mr Kennedy was foreign affairs adviser to the prime minister from 1990 to 1993. He is currently director of the Europe division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. His previous postings include ambassador to Korea, Apia and Geneva.
He takes up his new role in June.
