A man may have been "severely beaten" by a gang of youths after being hit by a car in Mt Eden Rd, Auckland, late on Thursday, police say.
He was in a critical but stable condition in Auckland City Hospital last night.
Police thought he was a hit-and-run victim after he was found but reports emerged of up to 15 people in the conflict about 10pm. Witnesses are asked to contact the Avondale station on (09) 820 5700.
