KEY POINTS:
The car thought to have been used in a shooting which forced a south Auckland family to flee their home on Sunday night has been found by police.
However, police are still looking for the weapon used in the attack thought to have been the result of clashes between rival youth gangs.
The family of four escaped their Mahia Road, Manukau, home after shots fired at a man running through their property on Sunday night shattered windows in the house.
Police believe the shots were fired from a red or maroon Nissan Pulsar which has been seized by police and is now being examined for clues to the identities of the shooters.
The shooting prompted the newly-elected mayor of Manukau City Len Brown to seek an urgent meeting with police yesterday where he said all police resources needed to be put into the search for the gun and the gunman.
"We can't have guns on the streets," he told the New Zealand Herald after the meeting with Counties Manukau police district commander, Superintendent Steve Shortland.
Mr Brown said yesterday he had been working with street gangs for a long time, including an involvement with a youth initiative called 274.
The Government had put about $10 million into initiatives to help at-risk young people and their families.
