Police and firefighters attended a "suspicious" car fire in Masterton yesterday.
The fire was in Hosking Pl about midday. Station manager Kevin Smith said it appeared the car had been deliberately set on fire.
"It appears that there were two separate fires set on each of the top of the tyres and the front wheel arches. It was of suspicious nature."
Mr Smith said although the fire was nowhere near the fuel tank there was still an element of danger to the situation.
"If the tyres heated up enough they can actually explode." He said neighbours were extinguishing the blaze with a garden hose when firefighters arrived.
