KEY POINTS:
Police are investigating two car thefts at Otaki Beach, 20km south-west of Levin, after motorists left their keys unattended while swimming.
Sergeant Noel Bigwood said it was likely to be the same person or group of people responsible for the thefts.
"In a small town more than one is a series, " he said.
Just after midday today the keys of an 82-year-old woman were plucked from the beach while she swam.
Her white Toyota Vitz, registration DSP639, had not been found and the "very upset woman" was referred to Victim support, Mr Bigwood said.
This was the second such incident this week, he said.
The first car was found abandoned in Dittmer Street, around 4km from the beach.
The vehicle underwent forensic examination and police were awaiting results, he said.
"Police urge car owners not to leave their keys unattended while swimming."
