An Auckland bakery was wrecked yesterday when an 87-year-old woman mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake and ploughed into the shop.
Police and ambulance services were called to Bakers Delight at the Pakuranga Westfield shopping centre, at around 12.30pm.
The car narrowly missed a child. However, two women - a customer and an employee - were taken to hospital.
The customer suffered serious leg injuries while the employee was treated for cuts to her head caused by flying glass.
Narash Soma, who works at a neighbouring store, said he heard a loud smash, followed by screaming shortly after lunchtime yesterday.
Mr Soma said he went outside to see what had happened.
"I guess it looked more like a movie scene.
"There was broken glass everywhere, the counter was gone, a car parked right inside the store, bread all over the place.
Mr Soma said the two women who had been hurt inside the shop were quickly attended to by people passing by and those working at neighbouring shops.
The driver was also taken to hospital, suffering from severe shock.
Inspector Shawn Rutene, of the northern police communications centre, said it was not yet known whether the driver would be charged.
