KEY POINTS:
Police were tonight seeking the occupants of a car who may hold vital information about a crash which left a family of three dead in the Horowhenua region last night.
A Levin couple, aged 48 and 28, and their seven-year-old son died after a head-on smash betwen their car and a truck and trailer unit laden with steel on State Highway 1 near the Waitarere Beach Road turnoff, north of Levin, about 11pm.
Police said the truck driver, a 43-year-old man, was uninjured but in shock.
Police communications manager Kim Perks said the cause of the crash was still being investigated but officers wanted to speak with the driver of a small, black hatchback that stopped at the scene immediately after the crash but then did a U-turn and left.
"The people in this car may be vital witnesses to the investigation and are asked to contact police," she said.
Ms Perks said the name of the victims would not be released until tomorrow as police were having difficulties tracking down key family members.
