A car that sped from the scene of a fatal shooting at a farm near Waingaro in the Waikato on Tuesday may hold the key to the killer's identity.
But police have not said what make or model of car it was, what direction it was travelling in or who they think was driving.
Yesterday sources told the Waikato Times the dead man, Dwayne Andre Wilson, 30, who lived at the remote property had connections with the Tribesmen motor cycle gang.
They said the person who shot Mr Wilson was staying at the secluded property with Mr Wilson and his partner Vicki Cobb.
A neighbour said gun shots and the noise of loud motorbikes were frequently heard at the house.
Mr Wilson's boss, Kerri McNabb of K&K Autospraying in Frankton, said he was a good bloke who mixed with the wrong people and paid the price.
Mr Wilson was found dead by ambulance staff at 3am on Tuesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Whitehead said a post mortem showed Mr Wilson had died from a gunshot wound.
Police were asking for information from the public about the car being seen on SH22 between 3am and 5am on Tuesday.
The Tribesmen motor cycle gang operates in the Northland, Auckland and Waikato areas.
Police intelligence sources say they have no fixed headquarters and are involved in the illicit drug market.
"They don't have the push or muscle of the importers like the Hells Angels or Head Hunters but have aligned themselves well," said one officer.
