A car that drove off a parking building was believed to be caused by an elderly person having a "medical event".

Emergency services were sent to the BNZ car parking building on Fencible Drive, Howick about midday after reports a car had driven off the first storey of the building.

A St John spokesman has confirmed that one person received injuries in the incident, which was caused by a medical event.

Injuries were initially reported to be minor, but were upgraded to moderate about 1pm.

The patient was taken to Middlemore hospital.

A Fire Service spokesman said the car had driven off the first floor of the BNZ parking building.

He said there was only minor injuries reported, but the number of patients was not yet known.

"The car is over the edge of the car park building, but is on stable ground," he said.

Emergency services left the scene shortly before 2pm.
