Car crashes through Auckland supermarket

A 25-year-old man will go before the court after his car smashed into an Auckland supermarket last night.

Police were called just before midnight after the vehicle ploughed through the front of Pak'n Save in Mt Albert and inside the supermarket, sending shopping trolleys sprawling.

Police North Communications Inspector Willie Taylor said the fire service and ambulance attended but the driver only had "superficial injuries".

Witnesses said it took more than an hour to remove the car from the store.

Mr Taylor confirmed police would prosecute the 25-year-old man behind the wheel.

"It looks like he was speeding down a side road, across the intersection and into Pak'n Save," he said.

"[Investigators] did not outline what [the charge] will be but it will be in the nature of careless use of a motor vehicle."

In the absence of a manager in store, Pak'n Save would not comment on the incident.

Foodstuffs spokeswoman Antoinette Laird said though there were staff in the supermarket when the crash happened, fortunately no one was near the window.

She said there was significant damage to the store front, which was currently covered with a tarpaulin, but it would be business as usual.

"It might not look very pretty but the store's open and functioning," Ms Laird said. "People need their groceries."
